Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states “[n]o person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” This applies to all schools, local and state educational institutions, and any other institution that receives federal financial assistance from the Department.

While originally associated with athletics, Title IX has change drastically over the years amounting to a dramatic departure from the statutes original purpose. The rise in controversy and statistics of increased sexual assaults on college campus have put institutions on high alert due to fear of losing Federal funding.

If you have been accused of sexual assault or sexual harassment at a college or university you should immediately hire qualified legal counsel. Whether that counsel is this firm, or another, do not try to handle this matter alone. Title IX disciplinary proceedings move quick, often resulting in a hearing and punishments with 30-60 days after a complaint is filed.

Title IX investigations can vary widely from institution to institution, which is why you need an experienced attorney to help you navigate the process. The consequences of these hearings can have life long impacts and may effect your status at your current school, your ability to enroll at a different school, and your reputation.

No matter the circumstances you have the right to have an attorney advise you, and you deserve someone who is knowledgeable and understanding of the complexity of these situations. If you believe your Title IX rights have been violated, Sarah Morrisson is a skilled attorney with years of experience ready to help and fight for you every step of the way.
