Felony Penalties in Oregon

Oregon law divides felonies into three classes, each carrying significant potential penalties:

Class A felony – Up to 20 years in prison and fines up to $375,000
Class B felony – Up to 10 years in prison and fines up to $250,000
Class C felony – Up to 5 years in prison and fines up to $125,000

Oregon's Measure 11 law adds another layer of severity for certain violent and sex crimes. It sets mandatory minimum sentences for certain offenses, which apply regardless of the circumstances of the crime or the defendant's history.

For example, Murder carries a mandatory minimum of 25 years, while first-degree robbery carries a minimum of 90 months. A judge has no discretion to go below these minimums at sentencing.

Beyond incarceration and fines, a felony conviction can result in the loss of voting rights, restrictions on firearm ownership, immigration consequences, and long-term barriers to employment and housing.

Felony Penalties in Washington

Washington divides felonies into three classes and employs a sentencing framework that accounts for an offense’s severity and the defendant’s criminal history.

Class A felony – The most serious classification in Washington, carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison and fines up to $50,000. Offenses in this category include first-degree murder, first-degree rape, and first-degree assault.
Class B felony – Carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and fines up to $20,000.
Class C felony – Carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison and fines up to $10,000.
